Welcome 8th Graders!
The Portage High School guidance department looks forward to meeting with you!
Willowcreek and Fegely students will receive a 9th grade course request form and a course catalog that contains every class that is offered to a freshman. The course catalog is a valuable tool because it contains class descriptions along with prerequisite information. Diploma types are included at the back of the catalog. Students will watch a video that gives an overview of diploma types along with an explanation of how to fill out the course request sheet. All of the handouts along with the video are posted, for your convenience, under the Class of 2021 tab so that you can also view from home!
Math, English, and science courses will be pre-determined and based on standardized test scores, teacher recommendations and middle school grades. All students will take two pe classes. Students had an opportunity to visit elective tables during 8th grade parent night and may view the video of electives that is included under the Class of 2021 tab. Students need to choose 6 elective credits and 6 to 8 alternate credits in the event that there is a scheduling conflict. Students should complete this process before the guidance counselors visit the middle schools.
Willowcreek March 13, 14, and 15
Fegely March 20 and 21
The guidance counselors are looking forward to meeting one on one with each of their students. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and fine tune their course requests. In the late spring, a list of course requests will be mailed to your home. A period of time will be given for you to contact your student’s high school counselor to make corrections.
