Career Technical Education Course Descriptions

Courses listed here are 3 period blocks of classes.  There is an AM session and a PM session for most courses.  Use of PTS Transportation to/from offsite programs is required for most locations (excluding Agriculture, Fire & Rescue, and Cosmetology).  Consistent attendance is mandatory for all CTE programs.

Students who demonstrate good attendance and a motivation to learn are likely to find part-time employment in the field while completing high school.  The instructors are a resource to finding full-time employment after graduation. The Level 2 Capstone courses often involve a work study experience.

This program covers the basic understanding of the theory, principles, new technologies, and skills necessary to prepare for a career in the automotive repair industry. The courses combine classroom digital learning software with hands-on experience in a fully equipped shop environment. The curriculum is based on ASE standards which is the basis for auto repair industry certification. 

The first year consists of classroom learning of safety, the use of tools and the theory and operation behind basic automobile systems. One quarter covers engine theory, operation and repair and another quarter is dedicated to basic electrical systems. As students learn the basics, the principles are reinforced by engine disassembly/reassembly plus preventative maintenance work, such as oil changes. The second year consists largely of working in the shop, learning to perform diagnostics and repairs on vehicles with classroom work providing the theory and the operation, diagnostic and repair of various automotive systems. 

Program Location: Willowcreek Middle School. Portage Township Schools will provide the ONLY method of transportation to this program. 

Dual Credits: Students may earn up to 18 dual credit hours in conjunction with IVY Tech upon the successful completion of course work, shop performance, tests, and the quarter End of Term Assessment. There is no cost for Ivy Tech credits.  

Student requirements: Students are required to furnish their own clothing suitable in a shop environment such as jeans and a shirt that will get dirty. It is the student’s responsibility to keep this clothing in reasonably clean condition. Students must have suitable closed toe canvas or leather shoes and work boots are preferable. The students will be provided one pair of approved eye protection.  A driver’s license is strongly recommended for second year students as it is difficult to teach common “driver-ability” issues without driving experience.

This program develops the know-how and hands-on skills demanded by the diesel industry for entry at the apprentice level. The course instruction covers the basics of engines, electronics, transmissions, differentials, chassis, brakes, electrical, hydraulics, precision measuring, welding, and machine skills. This course is aligned with ASE certification requirements.

  • Lincoln Technical Institute– Allows credit by examination for required classes for full credit and no tuition.

Through the utilization of classroom, homework, and hands-on experience, the CTE Construction Technology course exposes juniors and seniors to the various building trades. In the 2 year program, the students will build a complete single-family home.  Graduates of this course may be able to enter the construction industry at the apprentice level. Areas of instruction include safety, excavation, concrete, masonry, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, insulation, drywall, painting, cabinet installation, exterior finishes, interior door installation & trim, and energy efficient construction.

Program Location: Willowcreek Middle School. Portage Township Schools will provide the ONLY method of transportation to this program.

Dual Credit:  Up to 9 credits from Ivy Tech for Construction Technology I and the possibility of up to 9 additional credits for Construction Technology II. There is no cost for Ivy Tech credits.  

Student requirements: Students will incur additional expenses for work boots ($80). Proper work clothes are required.


*Principles of Construction is offered as a stand-alone course at PHS.  Students who successfully complete this course in grade 10 are given priority consideration for enrollment in grade 11 into the Construction program

If you are considering a career in education, this program is an excellent place to start. You will experience direct interaction with children and be supervised under a licensed teacher. You will learn teaching techniques by preparing and supervising planned activities that will enhance young children’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. You will be in front of the learning curve when you start college, because of the experiences you have had in this class. You will be spending one hour involved in classroom studies learning the different techniques and teaching methods and then two hours working in the actual elementary or middle school classrooms. 

You are expected to meet the appropriate dress codes and standards of professional conduct of an educational workplace; especially since you will be working daily alongside young children. Students may apply for the National Child Development Associate (CDA) credential while in the second year of the program.  

Dual Credit:  Up to 6 credits from Ivy Tech for Education Professions Level 1 and 6 for Education Professions Level 2.  There is no cost for Ivy Tech credits.  

Program Location:  Aylesworth Elementary/Willowcreek Middle School

Offsite Program Location:  Flint Lake Elementary.  Students should expect to take a drug test and background check.  Experiences will include Elementary and Special Needs levels

Student Requirements: Students enrolled in the program will have to show proof of a **current TB skin test before being allowed to participate in this program and meet the appropriate dress codes and standards of professional conduct of educational workplaces. This program provides an in depth study of the graphic arts/communication industry in a highly productive lab setting. Course topics in Level 1 include the operation of offset presses, graphic design, image setting, bindery functions, vinyl graphics, screen-printing, sublimation, large format printing and job orders. Course topics in Level 2 include management practices, estimating, job orders, customer involvement, production scheduling, and specific job specialization. These classes involve “LIVE” everyday production situations that are related to the graphics/printing industry.

First year (Dental Careers Level 1)

This program is designed for students who are interested in a career in dentistry. Students enrolled in this course will obtain knowledge in dental terminology, oral anatomy, basic dental radiology, basic dental office procedures, basic dental restorative procedures, and career explorations in the dental field. Students will explore career options in dentistry such as dental hygienist, dental assistant, dental lab technician, dental office manager/receptionist, or dentist. During the last nine weeks, students will complete 8 hours per week in a dental office placement.  This unique classroom experience combines lectures and hands-on clinical experiences that will provide students with the skills necessary for an entry-level position as a dental assistant. Many of the graduates have obtained positions as dental assistants while pursuing post-secondary degrees in dentistry.

Program Location: Portage High School. Transportation to and from outside work site is the students’ responsibility.

Dual Credit: Level 1 offers Indiana University Northwest 1 credit H242 Introduction to Dentistry.

Student Requirements: Students enrolled in this course will incur additional expenses of approximately $140.00 for student professional fee, uniforms, CPR certification, textbook rental and supplies. College credit will have an additional cost of $25.00.

Prerequisite: C or better in Biology 1, Health 1 and/or Advanced Health

This program will help you explore various paths within the Healthcare field.  Have you ever thought of yourself at work wearing gloves, facemask and a medical scrub uniform? Do you know the difference between a Nurse Practitioner and a Radiologist? Do you like a hands-on approach to learning? We have worked to create lessons that utilize many diverse approaches to learning and student success. Our teaching methods involve: lecture/discussion, anatomy dissection labs, medical competency labs, clinical rotations, and a medical clinic- job shadowing component. You will build your vocabulary through mastery of medical terminology. Students will also study the normal structure and function of the human body as compared to the disease process of the human body. This course is structured with the emphasis on Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, and an Introduction to Health Careers. The instructor and professional health care staff work together to teach lessons that complement one another and provide many opportunities for hands-on activities through dissections, labs, and clinical experiences. After successful completion of Level 1, you will be ready to enter advanced courses such as: Health Occupations, Dental Careers, Fundamentals of Sports Medicine, or the EMT course.

Dual Credit: Ivy Tech will award 3- credits for HLHS101-Medical Terminology, 3- Credits for HLHS100-Introduction to Health Careers and 3 credits for Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology. There is no cost for Ivy Tech credits.  

Student Requirements: Students enrolled in this course will incur estimated additional expenses for Health Occupations Students of America Chapter ($25), a scrub uniform ($35) CPR Certification ($19.50) and a medical terminology workbook/flashcards/CD ($85). This course requires that all students, participating in clinical experiences at hospitals and community clinics, must submit records verifying current immunizations in HBV, Covid (tentative), and submit a current TB test.

Computer Aided Design and Animation (CAD) I & II (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

CAD Drafting introduces and trains students in the use of “state of the art” computer graphics hardware and software for both architectural and mechanical applications. CAD skills are taught using several kinds of software. Due to advances in computer technology, students will be working on sophisticated engineering workstations operating in a networked environment. Emphasis will be toward increasing and refining DRAFTING/CAD knowledge and skills needed to produce engineering drawings and graphic presentations in a professional environment.

Cosmetology I & II, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 8 credits

Cosmetology is a program to develop skills and knowledge in performing a variety of beauty treatments including care and beautification of the hair, complexion, and hands. This program is designed to qualify students for the State Board of Beauty Culture examination. This program meets at Porter County Career & Technical Center. It must have started in grade 11. Fees are set each spring. The student should be aware of additional expenses involved in taking this class.

Electronics and Computer Technology I & II (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

The Electronics Technology Program helps prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment as technicians and engineers in the fields of Industrial, Instrumentation, and Communications Electronics. Students will receive instruction in basic, solid state, and digital electronics. Content includes “hands on” use of meters, amplifiers, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc. Students will conduct experiments involving receivers, transmitters, microprocessors, and computers. If you choose this “hands on” program, you’ll have the opportunity to work on amplifiers, computers, fiber optics, robotics, home and car audio, security alarm systems and much more.

Dual Credit: Possible credits available through Vincennes and/or Ivy Tech

Health Science Education I (Health Careers), (3 periods), 2 semesters, 4 credits (Anatomy and Physiology 2 credits)

Can you stay calm during an emergency situation? Can you control your emotions in the event of an accident? Would you be able to help a stray dog needing assistance? Could you imagine the working in a dental office? If the answer to any of these questions describes you, then you want to enroll in the Health Careers class. Health careers are the fastest growing occupational area with a tremendous demand for trained employees. Health Careers is an introductory class that will focus on options including nursing, dental, radiography, phlebotomy, emergency medical technician, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and more. Students will learn medical procedures in a hands-on environment. They will study the various career options and plan for their future. They will learn about basic anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology. Two of the 6 credits from this program will count as Science for Anatomy and Physiology.  This class prepares you for the world of work, post-secondary training, or for additional advanced career/technical education courses such as Health Science Education 2, Dental Careers, or Athletic Training.  PHS students should take the section of this class at PHS.

Dual Credit: 6 credits available through Ivy Tech, pending successful completion of Accuplacer Assessment.

Health Science Education II (Health Occupations), (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

The Health Occupations Program combines classroom work and an extended lab experience. The first semester includes an in-depth study of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, systems, and CPR certification. The second part of the program involves observational field experiences in a health care setting. The student will become a licensed certified nursing assistant by meeting the state required clinical hours in a long-term care facility.

Program Location: Porter County Career and Technical Center.

Dual Credit: Up to 8 credits possible – 5 are subject to completion of CNA, pending successful completion of Accuplacer Assessment.

Student Requirements: Students will need transportation for the 2nd half of the year for internship placements. Students are required to have a physical done by their family physician, purchase two sets of scrubs and a pair of white shoes, and a TB test. Additional costs incurred by the student are approximately $100.

Precision Machining I & II, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

If you have an interest in a manufacturing career, you should check out the Precision Machining Technology class. You will learn basic machining techniques, CNC machining, computer aided machining (CAM), quality control processes and basic mechanics. At the completion of the program, you will be prepared for a career in machining or a step ahead at any engineering major at college. You can earn articulated or dual credit in college by participating in this program. Sign up today.

Strategic Marketing Internship, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

Grade 12

Through the Marketing Education Program, a senior student can develop skills to advance in a variety of marketing occupations. There are three aspects of the program; the class, the work experience in a local business, and Skills USA. In the classroom, the student will learn marketing functions and management. Each student enrolled will receive credit and pay for his/her work. The student has the opportunity to participate in an exciting, challenging, and fun-filled student organization.

Entrepreneurship/Sports & Entertainment Marketing (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

The program is designed to allow students to begin and operate a small business. Students will be involved in all aspects of starting and operating a retail business, which includes market research, purchasing, inventory control, stocking, selling, promotion and financial management. This class meets the state economics requirement for PHS. To receive Economics credit, students will need to satisfactorily complete both semesters. In the second half of the class, you will learn how to develop sporting event and entertainment promotions.

Video Productions/Media Studies I & II, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

Do you want to know how to produce a TV show, be a news reporter, or shoot and edit your own films? Would you like to be on the cutting edge in the telecommunications field? If these are the career paths that are appealing to you, then consider signing up for this program. TV Productions/Telecommunications will provide instruction in various communication, marketing, media, production, and technical functions and tasks performed by employees, including management personnel, in TV broadcasting and telecommunications occupations. Students will produce programming that will be aired on public access television or on-line. Emphasis will be placed on career opportunities, production, programming, announcing, broadcast equipment operation, news and sports casting, broadcast regulations and laws, station organization, technical, oral/written communication, and listening skills. TV Productions students will learn the five components of television: camera operations, audio, lighting, writing, and editing. Students will have the opportunity to learn anchoring, directing, producing, studio cameras, audio, and studio lighting. You will train on professional studio equipment, creating a variety of video projects. Television Production students should have a strong interest in fine arts, speech, production, journalism, and electronics.

Industrial Maintenance Mechanical

This program will give the students a chance to work with metal, fabrication and welding with introductions to turning metal on a lathe and milling metal with Bridgeport milling equipment.  Students will learn the 3 different types of welding, Stick, MIG and TIG, with introductions to oxygen acetylene and plasma art cutting of different types of metal.  Another key component of the class is mechanical aptitude.  Students will use various hand tools, and power tools to solve different mechanical problems.  Students are also encouraged to bring in their own mechanical problems to class (with teacher approval), to try and work out and fix these problems.  Students will learn the industrial mechanic/technician is the key problem solver in the manufacturing workplace.  Level 2 covers more steps towards direct employment or further education through an apprenticeship program.  The course involves more direct work with pumps, hydraulic, steam, pneumatic and electrical components.  The first semester consists of safety training to fit industrial needs.  This can be used as a stepping stone for the 2nd semester programming which can include an internship, for approved students, in an area manufacturing facility.  Signing up for this program can be a jumpstart in a high-demanding career in the manufacturing and industrial maintenance fields.

Cisco Networking Academy (Fundamentals), (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

The Cisco Networking Academy is an “applications” based class that covers many types of practical networks you may encounter, from simple home or small office networks to more complex enterprise models. You will learn the technical skills and soft skills needed to succeed in entry-level networking professions such as a network installer, help desk technician, pre-sales support technician, or network technician. CCNA also provides an introduction to advanced technologies such as voice, video, wireless, and security. The CCNA curriculum is composed of four courses:

  • Networking for Home and Small Businesses
  • Working at a Small-to-Medium Business or ISP
  • Introducing Routing and Switching in the Enterprise
  • Designing and Supporting Computer Networks.

Computer Tech Support I (3 periods) 2 semesters, 6 credits

Want to be that go-to person who helps a coworker or client figure out why his or her computer is acting up?  As a Computer Tech Support student, you will learn to diagnose and repair computer problems. You will focus on maintenance and security issues. You will install operating systems and software. You will help to restore data. The field of technology is hot. According to CompTIA, there are almost 1 million open IT positions in the U.S. Despite their differences on the surface, virtually every industry today depends on IT. From small, family-run businesses to big corporations, there are IT careers for students in almost every organization around the globe

Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management I & II, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

Are you interested in a career in the foodservice and hospitality industry? You could be one of the 1.5 million people expected to be hired in the next 10 years. Taking this course could lead to certification and a $5,000.00 scholarship to the culinary school of your choice. This two-year program offers you the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills through classroom experiences. Emphasis is placed on developing workplace readiness skills in food preparation, safety and sanitation, management, financial planning of food costs, teamwork, creativity, communication, responsibility, and self-confidence. Classroom experiences are expected to include food preparation, demonstrations, guest speakers, videos, projects, textbook reading, study guides, test and field trips. The program is also valuable for one year of participation.

The following courses are offered at additional career-technical sites:


Emergency Medical Services (EMT), (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

Sign up for the Emergency Rescue Technology Academy if you are interested in learning about fast-paced emergency rescue career opportunities such as firefighting and emergency medical services. You will learn how to take care of critically ill and injured patients through lecture, lab, and clinical experiences, and develop strong communication and leadership skills that will last a lifetime. This challenging course is taught in a relaxed college atmosphere and requires extensive hands-on training. You will be responding on fire apparatus and ambulances on actual emergency calls. Additional topics will include orientation to fire department operations, arson investigation, wildland firefighter, vehicle extrication, injury prevention, and technical rescue. To enroll, you should possess personal characteristics such as honesty, good judgment, respect for human dignity, and a strong sense of ethics. This program is a nationally accredited EMT program. Seniors who obtain their EMT certification from the program can transition into a paramedic program after graduation and pursue an Associate’s Degree from Ivy Tech in Paramedic Science. After completing the Paramedic Science degree, a bridge program is an option for students who want to pursue a nursing degree at Ivy Tech.

Dual Credit: 6 credits from IVY Tech -  PARM 102 (7.5 credits) Emergency Medical Technician

Student Requirements:  Students will need to be 17 years of age by May 15 of the year you are enrolled and have a current state-issued photo ID and a current TB test.  You should also expect to a drug test and some other labs at no charge.

Fire and Rescue (3 periods) 2 semester, 6 to 8 credits 

Want to help others on some of the worst days of their lives?  People in towns large and small count on their volunteer and paid firefighters in a variety of ways.  This class at the state-of-the-art Multi Agency Academic Cooperative (MAAC) Emergency Services Training Facility, will help you prepare with the physical and mental requirements to be a firefighter.  You should, above all, be willing to help others. You should have sound judgment, strong moral values and respect for humanity. You should have the ability to communicate well through reading, writing and speaking. You might want to pair this course with an EMS or law enforcement class while still in high school.

Indiana State fire certifications may include:  1) Mandatory, 2) Firefighter I, 3) Hazardous Materials Awareness, and 4) Hazardous Materials Operations.

Athletic Training  (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

Sign up for Fundamentals of Sports Medicine if you’d like a hands-on class that will teach you techniques to help others prevent and treat sport injuries. You might find yourself going on to be an athletic trainer, physical therapist or other health care professional by earning the appropriate college degree(s). Students in the class learn about anatomy, first aid, CPR, vital signs and the prevention and treatments of sprains, strains and other injuries.

Horticultural Science I & II, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

If you like working with plants and designing landscapes, then this is the career and technical program for you. An on-site greenhouse will give you hands-on experience in areas of plant production, installation, marketing, and management of landscape plants and products. You will also learn to use Pro Landscape, the latest CAD software program to create landscape designs. You will enjoy extended field trips several times a month to explore all career areas and apply newly learned skills in landscape design and plant science. Students can receive a Core 40 and Academic Honors Diploma Science credit for plant science in this program.

Students will need to provide their own transportation to this location

Law Enforcement Careers Academy I & II (Criminal Justice and Criminal Investigations), (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

If you are interested in pursuing a career in law, law enforcement, probation, parole, corrections, or a security profession, join the rank and file of the law enforcement careers academy today. There are two different classes you can sign up for either as a junior or a senior. The Criminal Justice System class surveys the legal system and the various careers available. You will discuss and be exposed to the process from a suspect being questioned to the convicted being placed in prison. You will discuss and analyze the motivation for committing crime. In the Criminal Investigations class, you will study evidence collection, interview techniques, and proper documentation. You will discuss various types of offenses and how they are investigated. Each class invites numerous guest speakers and takes several field trips. In order to enroll, you should possess personal characteristics such as honesty, good judgment, integrity, and a sense of responsibility. You are eligible to earn six college credits for the successful completion of each class.

Program Location: Wheeler High School.  Criminal Justice also available at Hobart High School

Dual Credit: 6 credits through Vincennes University in each class.  Dual credits at Hobart are through Ivy Tech

Construction Trades: HVAC (3 periods) 2 semester, 6 credits

Our new program in Construction Trades: HVAC will give you a chance to learn how to operate, install and repair home and commercial furnaces and air conditioning units. You will learn how to control the temperature and air quality in a home or other building. The course is lab-based with every class including a hands-on portion where students can train and work on actual furnace and air conditioning equipment

Program Location: Ivy Tech Community College. Students will FOLLOW the IVY TECH Community College’s calendar for days off and breaks.

PHS transportation is only available on days PHS is in session.  Non-session PHS days will require the student to secure their own transportation.

Dual Credit:  Possibility of 9 credits or more

Welding I & II, (3 periods), 2 semesters, 6 credits

The program provides the student with a thorough technical understanding of arc and M.I.G. welding fundamentals and the use of arc welding machines and basic oxy-acetylene procedures.

Program Location: Ivy Tech Community College - Valparaiso. Students will FOLLOW the IVY TECH Community College’s calendar for days off and breaks.
