Portage High School teacher Mrs. Sherry Ondrovich checked in with some of her students last Thursday just hours before the first ever Unified Track & Field Meet.
They discussed their events and if they felt prepared. While nervous, the students were excited, and they used these feelings to motivate them at their first meet, which was hosted at PHS.
Unified Track & Field is a unique program new to PHS this school year that pairs student athletes with and without disabilities to train and compete in track & field events. This co-ed sport is sanctioned by the Indiana High School Athletic Association and coached by PHS teachers Mr. Todd Strom and Mr. Ondrovich.
The athletes participated in their first meet on April 15 on their home track. Mr. Strom said the Unified Student Athletes and their Unified Student Partners did a wonderful job and demonstrated success at the meet.
They will continue with weekly practices and meets through mid May. We look forward to following the students this season and watching their continued success!
