Art Course Descriptions
Updated November 2024 for the 2025-2026 School Year
Art classes are elective classes. The student may have to procure minimal personal art supplies for the course that is elected. A supply list will be provided at the start of the semester for any potential supplies that may be needed. All projects are the personal property of the student, upon release by the Art Department, providing: 1) all debts have been paid; 2) all art exhibition shows have been completed.
Introduction to 2D Art, 1 semester, 1 credit #4000

Introduction to 2D Art, the basic art course, provides a background in the elements and principles of art and design. Projects include drawing, painting, printmaking, and an introduction to computer art. Students explore various art media, materials, and techniques leading to the creation of portfolio quality works. 2D Art is a sequential learning experience encompassing art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production. Additional Fees or Requirements: A drawing book is required for this class.
Introduction to 3D Art, 2 semesters, 1 credits #4002

Pre-Requisite: Introduction to 2D Art
Introduction to 3D Art, the basic art course, provides a background in the elements and principles of art and design. Students explore various art media, materials, and techniques leading to the creation of portfolio quality works. 3D Art projects include sculpture, crafts and an introduction to computer art focusing on 3D projects. Additional Fees or Requirements: A drawing book is required for this class.
Photography I, 1 semester, 1 credit #4062
Grades 10, 11, 12
Through the study of the elements and principles of art and design, the student will produce quality black and white photographs. Art history, art appreciation, criticism, and production, the student will learn to use the camera as a fine art medium in the study of exposures, composition, appreciation, and presentation of photographs. Composition will be stressed, processing of black and white film and prints will be introduced. Students will need to use a 35mm film camera. The art department has several to loan. We encourage students to have their own camera. A completed portfolio is required for credit.
Digital Photography, 1 semester, 1 credit #4062D
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Photography I
Digital Photography provides experience working with the elements and principles of art and design. Students will experiment with many manipulation techniques and effects using Adobe Photoshop CS. Students in Digital Photography engage in a sequential learning experience that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics and production leading to the creation of a portfolio. Additional Fees or Requirements: Each student will need a digital camera with a memory card. A completed portfolio is required for credit.
Drawing I, 1 semester, 1 credit. #4060

Prerequisite: Intro to 2D
Students will learn various drawing techniques such as sketching, rendering, contour, gesture, and perspective drawing. Students will use an assortment of media such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, and ink. Students in Drawing 1 engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of a portfolio.
Drawing Advanced, 1 semester, 1 credit #4060H

Prerequisite: Drawing 1
Students will learn various drawing techniques such as sketching, rendering, contour, gesture, and perspective drawing. Students will use an assortment of media such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, and ink. Students in Drawing II engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of matted art work. Drawing II is a continuation of Drawing I stressing more involved composition and drawing from life. Additional Fees or Requirements: A drawing book is required for this class.
Painting I, 1 semester, 1 credit #4064
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Intro to 2D
Painting I concentrates on the fundamentals of painting and the use of watercolor and acrylic painting media. Direct observation as well as self-generated ideas will be utilized. Students in Painting I engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of a digital portfolio.

This course is a continuation of Painting I and will involve more experimental technique and development of individual style. Students engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of a digital portfolio.
Ceramics I, 1 semester, 1 credit #4040
Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Intro to 2D and Intro to 3D Art
Ceramics I is an introductory course in ceramics incorporating the elements and principle of art and design. The students will investigate the basic physical properties of clay, its origins, and its uses. Students will explore techniques of hand built construction: pinch, coil, and slab. Also the class includes throwing on the wheel and simple glazing. Students in Ceramics I engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of a portfolio.
Ceramics Advanced, 1 semester, 1 credit #4040H

Prerequisite: Ceramics 1
This is a continuation course for the student who is interested in working with clay, and gaining additional experiences in hand building, throwing, glazing, and firing techniques.
Jewelry I/Small Metals, 1 semester, 1 credit #4042

Prerequisite: Intro to 2D
This is an introductory course in jewelry making, incorporating the elements and principles of art and design. The basic techniques covered will be bending metal, cutting metal, forging metal, soldering, and cleaning and polishing the finished piece for presentation. Students in Jewelry I engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of a portfolio.
Jewelry Advanced /Small Metals, 1 semester, 1 credit #4042H

Prerequisite: Jewelry I
This is a continuation for those who are interested in creating jewelry. Students will explore flatware, lost wax casting, and soldering techniques.
Sculpture I, 1 semester, 1 credit #4044

Prerequisite: Intro to 2D and Intro to 3D Art
This course will involve experimental techniques and development of individual style for those interested in 3-D sculpture. Media include plaster, wood, foam, plastic, and more. Students engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production leading to the creation of a portfolio.

AP Studio Art, 2D Design, 2 semester, 2 credit #4050

Prerequisite: 3.0 overall GPA or teacher signature is required to enroll in this class, Intro to 2D and Intro to 3D Art
AP Studio Art is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. Students will be doing advanced art work that will include painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, and/or collage. Each student will develop a digital portfolio, produce art work with an artist statement to be critiqued. Each senior student will display their art work in a creative environment that they design. A drawing book is required for this class.
AP Art History, 2 semesters, 2 credits #4025
Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: 3.0 overall GPA or teacher signature is required to enroll in this class
The AP Art History course will engage students at the same level as an introductory college art history survey. Such a course involves critical thinking and should develop an understanding and knowledge of diverse historical and cultural contexts of architecture, sculpture, painting and other media. Many colleges and universities offer advanced placement and or credit to students who perform successfully on the AP Art History Exam.
