Design Pathway:  Course Descriptions

 

Principles of Digital Design, 2 Semesters, 2 Credits         #7140

Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

 

As the basis for creating well-structured design, students in this course are provided opportunities to learn the basics of creating graphic design using the principles of form and structure. This course explores how graphic content informs the structure of visual compositions and client-based outcomes. Instruction will engage students in developing conceptual thinking and problem-solving skills; observational and presentation skills; and knowledge of basic typography and color theory. Students will be learning in a MacOS lab using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator 


*Students must have a notebook/sketchbook and a flash drive (32gb or more)

 

Digital Design Graphics,  2 Semesters, 2 Credits           #7141

Grades 10, 11, 12

Required Co/Prerequisite – Principles of Digital Design

 

Students are provided the opportunity to understand methodologies and strategies used for building and maintaining narrative-based visual identities (branding). Students will employ advanced use of typographic skills; explore the development of culturally relevant messages and images, thus building longevity and viability in brand recognition. Corporate client projects focus on use of graphic design to express core values and impact consumer perceptions of the brand. Outcomes may include graphics and complete branding systems.


Projects include- Creative Typography, Logo Design, Apparel Design

Interactive Media, 2 Semesters, 2 Credits.    #7138

Required Co/Prerequisite – Digital Design Graphics

 

In this course, students focus on mastering foundational skills in the interdisciplinary field of 2D animation with a secondary emphasis on game design. Participants explore essential techniques in character animation, storytelling through visuals, and the integration of animation into interactive experiences. The class is production-oriented, allowing students to practice with industry-standard software tools used in 2D animation and game development. 


Students will learn to create and manage animated assets, incorporating various media types from multiple sources. The course also highlights the importance of utilizing scripting elements within game engines to animate game world events, enhancing storytelling and gameplay through multimedia presentations. Additionally, time will be dedicated to developing computer-controlled characters that exhibit distinct behaviors and personalities


 By the end of the course, students will have built a portfolio showcasing their 2D character art, animation sequences, and a playable demo that highlights their game design skills.

Graphic Design & Layout, 2 Semesters, 2 Credits.    #5550

Required Co/Prerequisite – Digital Design Graphics

This advanced-level course is designed for individuals seeking to deepen their expertise in graphic design and layout using industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Students will explore advanced techniques in typography, mastering the art of type selection, spacing, and hierarchy to enhance visual communication. The curriculum emphasizes sophisticated page layout strategies, allowing students to create visually compelling designs for various media, including print and digital platforms. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of production methods, ensuring that designs are not only aesthetic but also feasible for production.

Throughout the course, students will engage in portfolio-building projects that include poster design, vehicle graphics, consumer packaging design, brand guides, and logo design. Through hands-on projects and critiques, participants will develop a robust portfolio that showcases their skills in design concepts, composition, typography and technical proficiency.

Digital Design Capstone, 2 Semesters, 4-6 Credits.    #7246

Required Prerequisite – Graphic Design & Layout and/or Interactive Media

The Digital Design Capstone course serves as a culminating experience for students pursuing a post-secondary education and a career in graphic arts, animation, game design, and digital illustration. This independent study course allows students to delve deeply into their chosen areas of interest while honing their skills in visual storytelling and design. Throughout the course, students will embark on ambitious projects that reflect their unique artistic vision and professional aspirations. 


Students are encouraged to create a diverse portfolio that may include short animated films, comic books, branding packages, concept art, and packaging design. This hands-on approach facilitates exploration and experimentation across various mediums and techniques. In addition to producing individual projects, students will also develop a comprehensive demo reel that showcases their best work, highlighting their creativity and technical proficiency. Through regular critiques, mentorship, and peer collaboration, students will refine their projects and receive valuable feedback aimed at preparing them for the industry.


 By the end of the course, students will have a polished portfolio and demo reel that demonstrate their skills and readiness for a career in digital design, providing a strong foundation for future endeavors in the creative arts.

Radio and Television Broadcasting Pathway: Course Descriptions 

 

Principles of Broadcasting   2 semesters, 2 credits          #7139

Grades: 9, 10, 11

Prerequisite: None                   

 

The purpose of the Principles of Broadcasting course is to provide entry-level fundamental skills for students who wish to seek or pursue opportunities in the field of broadcasting or mass media. Students will explore the technical aspects of audio and sound design for radio production and distribution, as well as, the technical aspects of video production and distribution.  This course prepares students for the advanced skills needed to produce video and audio content in the field such as interviews, documentaries, and more.  Students will learn proper camera framing, composition, and sequencing.  They will learn Adobe video editing software and equipment used in studio production.  

 

Activities include:  interviewing students and staff, broadcasting sporting events, working closely with the recording crews, learning instant replay skills, working with all extra-curricular programs, creating videos to help engage the rest of the PHS student body, and social media optimization.  

 

Audio and Video Production Essentials     2 semesters, 2 credits     #7306    

Grades:  10, 11,12

Required Co/Prerequisite: Principles of Broadcasting

 

Audio and Video Production Essentials provides an in-depth study on audio and video production techniques for radio, television, and digital technologies. Students will learn skills necessary for audio production and on-air work used in radio and other digital formats. Additionally, experience will be gained in the development of the video production process; including skills in message development, directing, camera, video switcher, and character generator operations.

Activities include: Audio recording and editing. Video recording and editing.  Script writing. Television production process. Television studio operations. (Indians News Network: INN).  Lighting techniques.

 

Mass Media Production    2 semesters, 2 credits          #7307

Grades:  10, 11, 12

Required Co/Prerequisite: Principles of Broadcasting, Audio/Video Production

 

Mass Media Production will focus on the study of theory and practice in the voice and visual aspects of radio and television performance. In addition, this course introduces the skills used to acquire and deliver news stories in a digital media format. Students will learn how to research issues and events, interview news sources, interact with law enforcement and government officials, along with learning to write in a comprehensive news style.

 

Activities include:  Announcing, Voiceovers, News casting in broadcasting-cable-film, Studio operations and management, internet and social media platforms, programming, story and news writing, design and production software.

 

Radio and TV Broadcasting Capstone     2 semesters, 2 credits     #7308    

Grades:  11,12

Prerequisite: Principles of Broadcasting, Audio/Video Production, Mass Media Production


​​This course will cover a variety of domains further building on skills in video production, and

broadcast industry practices specific to radio, television, and digital media. Attention will be

given to cross-industry synergies, emerging technologies, and the global market for media.

Students are highly encouraged to do a video newscast or radio practicum to gain real-world

experience. In most cases, this practicum may be completed through a school-based

enterprise.

 

Activities include: Investigative reporting, documentary filmmaking, sports reporting, advertising editing, video creation for social media space, podcast recording, experimental lighting, and camera techniques
